Project of the rabies vaccination in N Kenya celebrates its 10th anniversary!

Between 05 and 31 January 2016, international field team working under the umbrella of VSF Czech Republic, headed by Andrei Mihlaca and Gianluca d Amico, has performed periodical field work in the frame of the Mt Kulal Rabies Control project.

The team consisted of two vets (from the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca) and 6 volunteering veterinary students (5 from from the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca and 1 from University of Agronomical Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca of Bucharest).

• Arapal (31 dogs, 5 cats)
• Gatab (50 dogs, 26 cats)
• Komote (11 dogs, 4 cats)
• Layeni (9 dogs, 3 cats)
• Loiyangalani (101 dogs, 24 cats)
• Lorolarani (10 dogs)
• Losikirishi (1 dog)
• Ngororoi (15 dogs, 2 cats)
• Olturot (117 dogs, 14 cats)
• Prisiak (2 dogs)
• Sarima (3 dogs)
• South Horr (155 dogs, 18 cats)

A total of 601 animals have been vaccinated (505 dogs and 96 cats).

Except vaccination of dogs and cats, the following supporting activities have been performed:

• vaccination cards were provided to all owners of vaccinated animals
• awareness in local communities during the vaccination
• awareness in local schools: Loiyangalani, Gatab, Olturot, South Horr
• discussion with the medical officers in human hospitals
• financial support to local communities for the PET of bitten patients

All work has been performed under the supervision of the County Veterinary Office in Marsabit. Prior to the vaccination campaing, several official emails were exchanged with CVO in Marsabit and before the field work, a meeting in Marsabit has been organized. This report will be forwarded also to the CVO in Marsabit.
